It’s been a long day! We arrived at the hospital at 5:45 am. Pre-op went unexpectedly smooth. Jackson did not require any oxygen last night or this morning (His oxygen usually dips between 4-5:00 am and we put oxygen on him). The surgical procedure started around 7:30 am.
The ENT went first, checked his airway repair procedure from six weeks ago, and reported that everything looks good and is healing nicely. The pulmonologist went second, performed a bronchoscopy, and was pleasantly surprised at how good his lungs look. He said that Jackson’s lungs aren’t perfect but look much better than the last time and better than expected. The orthopedic surgeon began the third and most intense portion around 9:00 am and finished around 3:30 pm, when he came out to talk to us.
Jackson went from the OR straight to the PICU. We got to see him in the PICU around 4:30 pm. Longest day ever!
The surgery went well. Jackson has A LOT of hardware in his hips and legs. Both hips were put back into socket, some muscles were loosened up, and his left knee was realigned. He has a ridiculous cast and brace system on his lower body.
We are currently in the PICU. Jackson’s lungs are a little junky from the long procedure. We’ve been told to be liberal with the morphine pump. We should be in the hospital for a week with respiratory issues and pain management as the main concerns.
